MIXED COORDINATION OF FE-3+ AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON THE IRON CONTENT IN SODIUM DISILICATE GLASSES

摘要

The ionic state and the coordination geometry of Fe ions in the vitreous and the devitrified states of (Na//2O. 2SiO//2)//1// minus //x(Fe//2O//3)//x glasses with 0. 05 less than x less than 0. 30, have been investigated by means of wet chemical analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared absorption, Fe core energy shift, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, and Mossbauer effect spectroscopy. Aside from preparing raw glasses with various Fe//2O//3 contents, the object of the devitrification was to precipitate iron-free crystals so as to increase the iron content in the untransformed glass matrix. In all the specimens studied the majority of Fe ions ( greater than 95%) were found to exist in the ferric state.
