title = "Fabrication of a small composite vertical-axis wind turbine",
abstract = "In this paper, the development process of a composite vertical-axis wind turbine for a 1kW wind power system is presented. The wind turbine is a multi-story structure in which each story consists of two floor plates and different types of blades, namely, wing-shape and S-shape blades. The floor plates and blades in each story are arranged in such a way that several curved tunnels are formed to allow wind going through the story from its front to its rear. When flowing through the tunnels, the wind will generate pressure on the blades and thus make the turbine rotate. The wing-shape blade is a composite sandwich structure of which the skin is made of glass fabric/epoxy laminae and the core PVC foam. The S-shape blade is fabricated using glass fabric/epoxy laminae. The floor plate is a composite sandwich plate which consists of glass fabric/epoxy face sheets and a plastic honey comb core. The blades in each story are adhesively joined to the top and bottom floor plates. The components as well as the whole turbine will be subjected to different strength tests to validate the adequacy of the design and study the integrity of the turbine.",
