A two-stage two-dimensional (2-D) beamforming scheme is presented for signal acquisition with a rectangular array in the presence of correlated interference. In the first stage, an optimum beamformer is constructed on a spatially smoothed, complementally transformed subarray to cancel the interference. A secondary combining of all possible subarray beamformers is then performed to fully exploit the array aperture. Specifically, both the maximum SNR and maximum SNNR combining methods are considered. By numerical examples, the proposed beamformer is shown to exhibit excellent output SINR performance against pointing inaccuracy.
