Thermodynamics of the O(N)-invariant sigma-model in 2 + 1 dimensions

Abstract

The O(N)-invariant non-linear σ-model in d = 2 + 1 is studied in the framework of the 1 N expansion. The model is non-renormalizable in the weak coupling expansion but becomes renormalizable in the 1 N expansion. We explicitly demonstrate how the constraint n2 = 1 exhibits itself on the quantum level. The phase structure and correlation functions are calculated at zero and finite temperature, and are compared with recent numerical simulations.
