Various challenges facing the semiconductor industry are discussed. The reduction in size of the MOS transistor led to a decrease in power consumption and also meant that integrated circuits could operate much faster. The ultimate limit of the MOS gate length is governed not by technology but by fundamental physics. The downsizing of MOS devices may come to an end in a couple of decades, but the evolution of silicon microelectronics will continue for much longer.
