The application of Taguchi method in designing a rifle muzzle flash reducer

Abstract

Taguchi robust design method and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are used to obtain the optimal design for the rifle muzzle flash reducer. Based on the existing research [4∼24], the critical design factors which influence its performance are found to be: (1) existence of the front cover (with or without), (2) diameter of the outside exhaust hole (or with no hole at all), (3) location of the exhaust hole on the extension tube (or with no hole at all), (4) diameter of the outside tube, (5) length of the outside tube. The result shows that the critical factor for reducing the muzzle flash are the existence of the front cover and the diameter of the outside tube. With the optimal design of the muzzle device, the muzzle flash can be reduced for 99.64%.
