Synthesis and characterization of chiral side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing laterally substituted mesogenic side groups

Abstract

A series of new side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes containing laterally substituted 4-(2(s)-methylbutyloxy)phenyl benzoate side groups were prepared. The lateral substitutent has a big effect on the formation of chiral smectic mesophase. The lateral substituents increase the possibility of the formation of chiral smectic phase. However, the bulky lateral substituent depresses seriously the thermal stability of the mesophase.
