Side force on an ogive cylinder: Effects of freestream turbulence

Abstract

The effects of freestream turbulence on the side forces acting on an ogive cylinder at a high angle of attack were studied. For a fixed angle of attack, an increase in turbulence intensity caused the side force to either decrease or increase, depending on the roll angle position of the surface. A small change in turbulence length scale (Lx/D) greatly influenced the reduction of side forces.
