Abstract

Based on the existing research, theory of acoustics and engineering experience, the critical design factors which influence its performance are found to be: (1) existence of the front cover (with or without), (2) diameter of the outside exhaust hole (or with no hole at all), (3) location of the exhaust hole on the extension tube (or with no hole at all), (4) diameter of the outer tube, (5) length of the outer tube. Taguchi robust design method and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are used to obtain the optimal design for the rifle muzzle noise reducer. The result shows that the main factors for reducing the muzzle noise are "the diameter of the outside exhaust hole "and " the location of the exhaust along the extension tube." On the other hand the critical factor for reducing the muzzle flash is the existence of the front cover of the muzzle device the muzzle noise can be reduced up to 25.69dB.
