Abstract

Hydraulic structures are designed with consideration given to some natural events that could be imposed on the structures during their anticipated service life. Because of various uncertainties, design of hydraulic structures should include as many of these uncertainties as possible. This paper closely examines the effect of inherent hydrologic and parameter uncertainties, as well as hydraulic uncertainty, on the optimal risk based design of hydraulic structures by using levee system design as a case study. Hydrologic model uncertainty is not considered in this paper. However, hydrologic model uncertainty can be incorporated by replacing the annual expected damage.
