This paper presents the design and implementation of a programmable current vector control (CVC) IC for ac motor drives. A digital current vector control scheme realized using complex programmable logic device (CPLD) has been proposed. This CVC IC is designed as a co-processor for general-purpose microcontrollers used for adjustable speed ac drives. This programmable digital current controller is realized using a 10-bit integer arithmetic and employs about 20 thousands logic gates of a CPLD (FLEX 10 K 100) from Altera Co. The designed CVC IC can be used for both synchronous and induction motors. The sampling rate can be programmed up to 50 kHz. Application of this CVC IC with a conventional microprocessor in an AC drive has been demonstrated. Experimental results are given to illustrate the performance of the designed vector control IC.
