Abstract

Semi-submersible Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) are a special class of oil exploration vessels designed for deep ocean floor drilling and well completion. Since large amounts of oil are recovered from the ocean floor far from the coasts, technologies for offshore drilling are constantly changes to increase distance and depth. A semi-submersible platform incorporates a large number of patents and are hired by oil companies depending on technical capabilities. This research studies the technology development and evolution of semi-submersible MODU patents. These patents describe the designers, inventors, and the content of the changing technology. With this information, a macro data analysis of patents, such as top investors or companies, is conducted. Not only the basic patent profiles are collected, but also a content analysis of the collected patents is conducted. Using the methodology and approach of Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), the top 20 key-phrases, which represent the content of a certain patent, are extracted. The top ranking key-phrases are used for patent clustering. Clustering is the task of segmenting a set of data into several homogeneous subgroups or clusters. The clusters of MODUs are read and interpreted to map the technologies groups and trends in order to quickly capture trends of research and development in the semisubmersible drilling technology.
