Abstract

An experiment was carried out, first, to establish whether excursion size differences of 1.5 semitones (ST) in accent-lending F0 movements are sufficient to create a difference in the perception of prominence, and, second, to assess whether differences in the perception of prominence as a function of excursion size differences are more adequately described using a semitone scale or a Hertz scale. The results suggest that a difference of 1.5 ST is sufficient to cause a difference in the perception of prominence, and that prominence judgements of different excursion sizes follow a Hertz scale more closely than a semitone scale.
