On the height accuracy of elevation from digital medium format camera

Abstract

Although medium format digital camera has relatively smaller image size and therefore lower resolution at a given flying height than the large format camera, it is found to be a very useful tool to accompany airborne lidar mission for producing digital ortho images. In this study, the images taken with a medium format camera in the lidar mission are studied for the accuracy of digital elevation generated with automated matching. The photogrammetrically produced digital elevations are compared with the digital elevation model edited from lidar point clouds. The study site is located in Lan-Shih bridge section of Taan River, Taichung. This area is featured with river channel and does not have heavy vegetation or built-up neighborhood. Due to the complexity in editing elevation of the vegetation covered area with stereo pairs, analysis is mainly conducted with the bare-earth zones. The data from two missions, 2008 and 2009, are analyzed. It is found that the RMSE of height difference is 1.69m for 2008, and 2.13m for 2009. Further analysis is performed for studying the relation of height deviation and local slope. While the slope of the terrain ranges up to 80 degree, the RMSE of height difference in10 degree slope interval ranges from 0.42 to 5.55m for 2008, and 0.44 to 6.84m for 2009. As expected, there is a clear trend that the RMSE increases with the slope.
