Abstract
A novel bi-directional add/drop module (B-ADM) by using two waveguide grating routers (WGR) and wavelength channel matched fiber gratings is proposed. The module can be operated in two different conditions. When the two counterpropagating wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals are in different optical bands, the Rayleigh backscattering and optical reflections, generated by forward signals in fiber links can be completely filtered out by the WGR and the fiber gratings. Another alternative to use the B-ADM is to allow both the forward and the backward signals to operate at the same wavelength band. The module is demonstrated suitable for the development of the single fiber bi-directional ring networks (SFBDRN).
