Approaches to generate monocyclic carbon clusters, in particular C18, which are regarded as fully dehydrogenated annulenes, from appropriate organic precursors having well-defined dehydroannulene structure are reviewed. The geometries and energies of cyclobutene-annelated dehydroannulenes, which are the model compounds of possible precursors of monocyclic C12, C14, C16, and C18, are estimated by the semi-empirical AM1 calculations and are compared with those of the corresponding parent dehydroannulenes.
