Liquid crystals for ophthalmic lenses and biosensing applications

Abstract

We introduce two bio-photonic applications of liquid crystals. One is the ophthalmic lenses with large aperture size. The challenge and the solutions are discussed. The other is the biosensing devices based on a switchable surface of a liquid crystal and polymer composite film, such as a sperm testing devices and high-density lipoproteins. Liquid crystals indeed have great potentials beyond displays.
