Abstract

Embedded systems have been deployed in numerous applications in various fields, such as portable devices, automotive systems, and au- tomation control systems. With the increased application fields, em- bedded systems are mission-oriented, life-critical, and performance- sensitive. To be optimized for a specific purpose, designs of embedded systems are required to meet different kinds of constraints, for example, performance, power consumption, temperature, timing, and cost, etc. With the strong demand for design challenges in embedded systems, this special issue presents recent advances in embedded systems design and development. The special issue includes extended version of 3 top papers from the Embedded Systems Track in the ACM/SIGAPP Symposium On Applied Computing (SAC 2019). The paper “Verifying Parallel Dataflow Transformations with Model Checking and its Application to FPGAs ”by Robert Stewart et al. introduces a linear temporal logic model checking approach to verify a dataflow program transformation in dynamic dataflow programs. The paper “Dynamic Reconfiguration of embedded-DRAM Caches employing Zero Data Detection based Refresh optimization ”by Sheel Sindhu Manohar and Hemangee K. Kapoor presents a value-based refresh saving method to reduce time and energy consumed by the periodic refresh demanded embedded-DRAMs. The paper “Mitigating Write Amplification Issue of SMR Drives via the Design of Sequential-Write-Constrained Cache ”by Yu-Pei Liang et al. proposes sequential-write-constrained cache management to mitigate the write amplification issue of shingled magnetic recording drives with the cached data hotness consideration. We would like to thank all the authors for submitting their excellent work to this special issue for consideration. We also thank all the review- ers for reviewing the submissions and providing valuable feedbacks
