International investigation on the earthquake damaged Chi Lu cable stayed bridge after repair and several years of operation

Abstract

The Chi-Lu Bridge is widely known as the first earthquake-damaged cable stayed bridge in the world. As VCE has been involved in the design and construction supervision of the bridge and NCREE has been performing monitoring works at this bridge since 2001 a joint monitoring campaign of VCE and NCREE was conducted at the Chi Lu Bridge in May 2011 to compare different monitoring approaches and consequential results. This paper gives an overview about the applied technologies, methodologies and the results derived from structural assessment. The observation process by means of Sructural Health Monitoring already covers a decade of the bridge's life-cycle.
