In-situ arrangement of living cells on a fabricated surface by femtosecond laser

Abstract

A flexible rearrangement method of living cells on a solid substrate was developed. The cells were placed one by one on an array of micro cell-adhesion areas that were surrounded with a cell-repellent perfluoroalkyl-self-assembled- monolayer (Rf- SAM) by femtosecond laser (fs-laser). To make channels for ensuring cell junctions, the fs-laser was condensed on the R f-SAM layer during the cell culture. Next, the layer was partially detached by the fs-laser, resulting in a groove of several μm width. The cells elongated along the grooves and clung to one another. This result indicates that the cells can be temporally and spatially connected on demand.
