Abstract
The possibility of breaking O(N) symmetry in scalar theories by the vacuum expectation value of composite operators rather than by the shift i=vi is considered. We apply the Gaussian variational method and find that, in the simplest O(N)-symmetric renormalizable scalar theories in 3+1 or 2+1 dimensions, this possibility is not realized.
