Dual-band circularly polarized antenna for RFID reader applications

Abstract

This paper presents a novel design of dual-band and circularly-polarized antenna for RFID reader applications. Aperture-coupled ring radiators at 900MHz and 2.4GHz were adopted for dual-band operation. The coupling apertures were arranged orthogonally with proper phase offset to achieve circular polarization (CP) at both bands. The fabricated prototype exhibited good impedance bandwidth covering both UHF (902MHz 928MHz) and microwave (2.4GHz 2.5GHz) bands. Additionally, an axial ratio of less than 3 dB with better than 5dBi gain was achieved at both bands.
