This paper is focused on design, analysis, fabrication and tests of a high-power and high-speed motor for adopting in a centrifugal compressor with an AMB. A novel approach for retaining the PMs of the rotor is proposed. To enhance the motor performance, the analysis and design are focused on key magnetic indices cogging torque, back-EMF, torque ripple to output torque ratio, etc. In addition, for conducting the static and dynamic stabilities at high-speed revolution, the critical speed, yield strength, and unbalance of the rotor are took into account while carrying out mechanical analysis. Furthermore, the heat sources of the whole system is monitored in order to obtain the signals for demagnetization of PMs and failure of bearings in advance. Then, a MG set is developed to evaluate the performance of the motor at major working points. Based on the above results, the key element of an AMB centrifugal compressor, a 65 kW, 32000 rpm motor with an adequate efficiency has been successfully obtained.
