Control plane latency reduction for OpenFlow/NFV-based mobile service network

Abstract

Software-Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization technologies can be used to construct customized Mobile Service Chain cheaply and elastically. In the OpenFlow, the commodity OpenFlow switch with limited TCAM size will cause the table overflow problem when managing huge number of users' flows. In order to improve the network performance in the control plane of SDN/NFV-based Mobile Service Network, we divide users who subscribed the same type of service chain into several groups with unique group IDs and design a Hash-based Queue data structure to shorten group assignment time. OpenFlow switches forward packets by tagged group ID instead of IP/MAC address to reduce the utilization of TCAM to network latency due to table overflow problem.
