Abstract

Based on polymer/ liquid crystal phase separation mechanism, a novel black and white cholesteric liquid crystal display has been developed. This display combines the advantage of polymer wall, dispersed polymer, and vertical alignment. The polymer wall structure provides mechanical strength. The dispersed polymer and vertical alignment provide the multi-domain planar structure, which presents the white appearance in the planar state. This display could be implemented in the electronic paper and other flexible display applications, and this technique has the characteristic for roll-to-roll fabrication.
