Analysis and architectures of MCTF for scalable video coding

Abstract

This papers presents an architecture family for motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) used in the AVC-based scalable video coding standard. We first map the MCTF algorithms into the hardware architecture, schedule them by the macroblock level pipelining and explore the possible hardware design space by the folding techniques. The results show that the vertical folded and quarter folded designs achieve the lowest hardware cost and competitive performance among the architecture family.
