An intelligent handoff algorithm for wireless communication systems using grey prediction and fuzzy decision system

Abstract

For wireless communication, a mobile motion will increase the number of handoff algorithms, and require faster handoff algorithms. In the line-of-sight transmission case, it is important that the handoff algorithm should detect the cell boundary early, otherwise this will lead to the channel dragging into the new cell. In the non-line-of-sight transmission case, a mobile station on turning a street corner with received signal dropping will lead to a loss of communication if not identified early enough. In this paper, we propose an intelligent approach using grey prediction and a fuzzy decision system (GPFD) to treat it. The GPFD method is composed of a grey prediction scheme and a fuzzy decision system. The grey predictor is used to predict the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) value for the inputs of the fuzzy decision system. Subsequently, the fuzzy decision system calculates the so-called handoff factor (HF) and compares it with the handoff factor threshold (HFT) to make the handoff decision. Our decision approach based on prediction approach is intended to reduce delayed handoffs. The proposed GPFD has high prediction accuracy, on-line performance, and robust decisions; resulting in good performance, even when the so-called Manhattan corner effect causes the received signal level to drop. Several simulation results and comparisons are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed GPFD method.
