An efficient storage server in near video-on-demand systems

Abstract

An efficient storage server with a novel data placement scheme for a near video-on-demand (NVOD) system is presented in this paper. The proposed data placement scheme fully exploits the periodical broadcast characteristic of a NVOD server to reduce the disk seek overhead. After employing our method, the disk throughput can be promoted to a great extent and the buffer requirement is much reduced. According to the simulation results, the total buffer requirement of a NVOD server can be reduced by around 75% than that of the previous approaches.
