Abstract

A versatile multi-zonal gridding technique to generate body-conforming grids for complex geometries is presented here. The method ensures continuity of grid lines across interzonal boundaries. A set of Poisson equations is solved to generate the grid. The interzonal boundaries are allowed to evolve as a part of the solution. This is achieved by periodically replacing die boundary points with the coordinate averages of die immediate interior points of the neighboring /ones. The initial specification of interzonal boundaries can be quite crude. This simple and effective approach generated a globally smooth grid for the multi-body case of the Shuttle Orbiter with external tank (ET) and solid rocket boosters (SRB).
