A parity-bit based rate adaptation scheme for the IEEE 802.11a wireless lans

Abstract

In this paper we present a simple rate adaptation scheme by taking advantage of the information from parity-bits in the SIGNAL field of the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) standard. Using this mechanism, the receiver can notify the transmitter to adapt to a higher or a lower data rate according to current wireless channel conditions. The goal of our scheme is to find the most efficient transmission mode, while maintaining acceptable quality. We also develop a physical layer simulation platform to investigate the performance of the proposed scheme.
