History
The Institute of Environmental Engineering was established in 1990 to cope with the national need for environmental protection. The Master’s degree program was offered at the beginning and the PhD degree program was subsequently added in 1994. The Institute was originally located at Bo-Ai campus. In order to provide better teaching and research environment, the Institute moved into a new Environmental Engineering Building at Kuang-Fu campus in 2009. In addition to Taiwanese students, the Institute started to recruit international students in 2007. The Institute has cultivated more than 600 master or Ph.D. graduates with advanced environmental science and engineering training.
Current Situation
The Institute has 8 full-time faculty members (including 2 Chair Professors and 2 Distinguished Professors), 2 administrative assistants, and 1 technician. It recruits about 25 Taiwanese master students and several PhD students annually. In addition, it receives many international applications seeking graduate degrees. The number of international students has now reached around 20% of total enrolled students. About 50% of the courses are taught in English and the rest are in Chinese.
Educational Objectives
To equip students with the following abilities:
1. Problem analysis and solving ability for both regional and global environmental issues.
2. Independent innovative thinking, planning and project execution ability.
3. Leadership in planning, decision-making and inter-disciplinary coordination for solving environmental problems.
4. Global vision and international collaboration.
Research Fields and Achievement
Researches of the Institute focus on the four fields: nanotechnology, biotechnology, transport and monitoring, and sustainable technology. Approximately 43 papers are published every year, and over 60% of the papers are published in the top 20% SCI journals. In addition, there has been over 100 patents granted and 36 technology transferred. Four out of the 8 professors have received the Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan.
