The Department of Applied Mathematics at the National Chiao Tung University was established in 1972. The master degree program and the Ph.D. degree program were initiated by the Department in 1977 and 1984 respectively.
In 2007, the Department began the master degree program on “Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing” under the system of “One department with several programs”. The Department currently has five research groups including “Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing”、“Financial Engineering and Probability”、“Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems”、“Discrete Mathematics and Optimization” and “Number Theory, Geometry and Analysis”. Each of these five research groups of our Department has its own standing point of specialization, and is well-recognized in the Taiwanese mathematical community.
Indeed, applied mathematics nowadays has already been deeply immersed in the pace of the advancing steps of the humankind. Following the extremely rapid developments of large data science and artificial intelligence, research in applied mathematics is currently marching towards a completely new area of scientific enterprise. Indeed, it is expected that applied mathematics will become one of the cornerstones grounding the developments of large data science and A.I. Hence, research activities in applied mathematics will proceed in such a way which is along the current line of scientific trend in the world.
